"13 Stories" Opens at Studio Chavarria

ASHEVILLE, NC - Vannfuller's first follow up showing of his "13 Stories" exhibition kicked off Friday night, Jan 15th at Studio Chavarria. This was the first opportunity for Asheville residents to see the work since the big one night premiere last November at the Windsor Hotel. As the interest and conversation about these unknown stories from their city's past continues to grow, so does the anticipation for Vannfuller's upcoming new show in April– "Primal Faces". The "13 Stories" exhibit will be on display through March at Studio Chavarria, 84 West Walnut Street.

One notorious hotel.
After one great depression, two world wars, the birth of the baby boom generation and decades of neglect, the Windsor Hotel, once a shining example of mid-atlantic hospitality, evolved into a boarding house and later a flop-house for transients and miscreants. The sordid details of their lives and the legacy they left is what first attracted Vannfuller and inspired him to shoot here. Using the classic beauty of female nudes as a counterpoint to the dilapidated property, at its heart these photographs are simply his interpretation of a place and a time. Taken from the Windsor’s front desk logs, the accompanying quotations were copied verbatim, with all the typos and misspellings intact. To Vannfuller, the number 13 is only as unlucky as one wishes to see it.

Vannfuller's story
As the former owner and creative force behind Pinkhaus Design Corp. in Miami, Joel Vannfuller has worked with many highly regarded professional photographers. His graphically trained eye has served him well as he made the leap from designer to photographer. By collaborating with Brad Miller, who's been shooting for over 40 years, Joel patiently learned the craft, slowly raising the bar to a level he felt comfortable with before sharing his photographs with the public. A deeply grounded history of starting with a solid idea before shooting a single frame explains what makes Vannfuller tick. Over four decades of creative pursuits have given him a sensibility that can now be seen on gallery walls.

Upcoming
Vannfuller is preparing his second solo exhibit opening in April 2010, "Primal Faces". In addition, he's working on an upcoming exhibition called "Seescapes, Folly Beach".
